The argument will always rumble on, I can't argue with those who say Messi is the best ever, his stats are unbelievable, as are his achievements. As a goalscorer, and impact on games, it's hard to argue.
I think the better debate is who is the player you would pay the most to watch play.
For me, of those I've seen, Maradona easily. Followed by Zidane.

One thing I would say is Maradona and Messi are the two best ever, with Zidane and Ronaldo following.
I will always remember Maradona for taking the game to a completely different level, What he did on a pitch had never been seen before. IMO that gives him an advantage when considering the best ever, as that can give him the sentimental vote. Some will always say he's the best no matter what. Fact.
The argument is has Messi now taken that up a notch, imo he has, but can understand those that would say he still hasn't.
And I don't buy the argument that you are considered the best because you won a world cup.

Maradona was a phenomenal player to watch but won the World Cup off the back of cheating a goal in a QF they may well have lost otherwise.
Only ever won 8 club trophies and his best days at Napoli, match fixing was common in Serie A, which even ended up losing him a league title.

Every single Argentinian absolutely loves Maradona, but they're not quite as in love with Messi.
I think Ronaldo edges Messi anyway, he made Portugal European champions and has been successful for three massive teams!

Messi is an extraordinary player in a superb team - and his goal-scoring record in particular is highly impressive. The player of his generation (including Cristiano Ronaldo) and one of the top six or seven players of all time.
But not up to Maradona's level.
Maradona did everything that Messi does, and all during a period where the rules did not help him as much as modern footballers.
It's not Messi's fault, or indeed any player's fault, but forwards these days have it much easier than in Maradona's pomp. They have benefited hugely from subtle rule changes that favour attacking football and goals - the offside rule (now only having to be level, whereas in the past you were offside if you were level), the ludicrous "not interfering with play" rule (if any player on a football pitch is not interfering with play then they should leave the pitch), the outlawing of the tackle from behind, straight reds for high feet, bookings for intent etc etc.
All of these have created an environment that has given attacking players a far bigger advantage than in Maradona's or Pele's day. It has made for entertaining football - so I'm not against it. But it has also made me appreciate the genius of players like Maradona, Pele, Cruyff and others even more.
Those players achieved everything they did without the benefit of generous rules, with hairy-arsed defenders kicking lumps out of them without getting red cards, butchered regularly by tackles from behind or high feet. Some of the treatment Maradona got from defenders in Italy, for example, would cause a scandal in modern football. Yet he took it all, week in and week out, and still imposed his unquestionable genius on every side he played him and almost every game he participated in.
The greatest footballer ever to take to the pitch: Hand of God goal or not.
Messi and Ronaldo will rightly be remembered as true greats. But they are not on his level.
